Penicillium expansum, the causal agent of blue mold disease in apples, is one of the most studied filamentous fungi of the genus Penicillium. This plant pathogenic fungus can infest many fruits during harvest and throughout the storage period and produces mainly the mycotoxin patulin. However, patulin is not the only mycotoxin produced by P. expansum, as it produces a wide variety of secondary metabolites including citrinin and chaetoglobosin A.
