Managed ecosystems are ecosystems that are designed and handled, in which species of interest are chosen by humans. They are used in many fields of applications, spanning from bioreactors, in which microorganisms are put in interaction in order to achieve a specified industrial goal, to agriculture where crops are in interaction with their biotic environment. Left to their natural evolution, they do not necessarily produce the desired outcome, in the sense that they might not be as productive as can be hoped for, or they are derailed from their track by interactions with undesired species.
