Factors related to compliance of physical therapy out-patients at the De La Salle University Medical Center, Dasmarinas, Cavite

Compliance of patients with any form of therapeutic intervention is crucial. This study determines the factors related to compliance of physical therapy outpatients at the De La Salle University Medical Center in Dasmarinas, Cavite.A total of 149 outpatient physical therapy charts at the De La Salle Univeristy Medical Center in 1999 were analyzed. Outpatient records for the year 1999 were reviewed. To test the hypotheses, chi-square (X2) statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used at a level set at 0.05.Results show the influence of the following variables: sex of patients, sources of payment for physical therapy services, duration of illness and outpatients\u27 functional level of independence.The following are the conclusions of the study: (1) Compliance rate of outpatients was low, (2) compliance was influenced by the sex of patients-females complied better than males, (3) compliance was influenced by the duration of illness, patients in the subacute state of illness complied better than those in the acute and chronic stages of illness, (4) as age increase, compliance increases, (5) marked improvement in the physical function of patients was seen after physical therapy session, (6) compliance rate was not influenced by the improvement in physical function nor the number of physical agents applied
