Spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 (SCA17) is an autosomal-dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease predominantly characterized with ataxia, dysarthria, chorea, dystonia, pyramidal disorders, dementia, psychiatric disorders, and seizures. These symptoms are consequence of neuronal failure and death that appears most prominently in the cerebellum, but also in many other parts of the central nervous system. So far, no causal treatment for this disease is available.
