Social Equality of Religion and Belief, a collection of essays edited by Alan Carling, is an excellent addition to the growing body of literature that considers the appropriate relationship between (broadly speaking) church and state. While the major focus is on the United Kingdom, a number of authors engage in comparative analysis, and there are chapters relating specifically to the United States, Canada and Brazil. The discrete topics addressed by the various contributors are impressively diverse, yet the book itself reads as a cohesive whole; each contributor focuses on the central question of how the state should interact with religion or belief
