Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water within a field is critical for effective variable rate irrigation (VRI) management. Proper VRI can result in improved protection of the crop from early onset of crop water stress while minimizing runoff and drainage losses. Soil sensors can be utilized to manage irrigation within crops with both volumetric water content (VWC) sensors and matric potential sensors. These sensors can be very costly and cannot completely represent the spatial variation of soil water and crop stress dynamics throughout a field.
