The clays are naturally occurred with large surface area and cation exchange capacity. Clays are frequently utilized for the adsorption of toxic dye and heavy metal contaminants in water because of their environmentally benign character. Numerous studies involve clay, modified clay, and the introduction of inorganic or organic elements into the interlayer space of the clays. As a result, process-wise selectivity changes may be possible. By treating the clay surface with acid and/or base or functionalizing it with specific additions, the surface can be encouraged for larger exchanges. In this review article, we have summarized recent works on the use of natural and modified clays as selective adsorbents for water treatment
