Whereas 20% of patients with sarcoidosis demonstrate hepatomegaly at some time during the course of their illness, noncaseating granulomas can be identified in over 75% of liver biopsies from patients with sarcoidosis, whether or not they have hepatomegaly or clinical evidence of hepatic dysfunction. Hepatic disease is asymptomatic or mild in most patients, and healing often occurs spontaneously. When liver damage is severe, portal hypertension, cirrhosis, jaundice, ascites, and esophageal varices may develop
