T. cruzi is found throughout the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. It is transmitted to humans by various species of insects, such as the large reduviid bugs Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma magista (the kissing bug). These insects are found in large numbers in the wild, where the parasite is transmitted among many mammalian species that constitute its natural reservoir, and in endemic areas, where they live in the nooks and crannies of substandard dwellings
