The marginalia can offer surprising insight into the scribe’s life and the culture that surrounded the creation of a manuscript. There are articles and books written on continental European marginalia texts and images but when it comes to Icelandic manuscripts, there are only several papers which discuss the marginalia text and none which focuses on marginalia images. This thesis will discuss the marginalia images of two Icelandic manuscripts AM 345 fol. and AM 431 12mo from the 16th century with the help of continental European manuscripts to deepen the understanding of the scribes and scribal culture in medieval Iceland.
