The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of list similarity on buildup of proactive inhibition by manipulating both within list similarity and between list similarity on acoustic property (Exp.1) and on figurative property (Exp.2) of Kanji. In Exp.1, 96 students were assigned to one of the four list conditions (see Table 1). Each list consisted of three Kanji letters. Under the S-S condition, all list in three trials consisted of Kanji letters from the same acoustic articulation. Under the S-D condition, two lists in adjacent trials consisted of Kanji letters from different acoustic articulation.
