Down Syndrome (DS), also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder that results from partial or complete third copy of chromosome 21. It is one of the most common genetic disorders worldwide affecting 6 million individuals. It is the leading cause of lifelong intellectual disability and is often associated with other clinical alterations [1], including cardiac and gastrointestinal anatomic defects, an increased incidence of Alzheimer's disease as well as a heightened vulnerability to infections.DS has shown to be associated with inflammatory and autoimmune processes such as periodontitis, alopecia, dermatitis among others [2].
