Fortalezas y estilos educativos en abuelos con nietos de 6 a 12 años

Although grandparents are not responsible for the education of their grandchildren, there is no doubt they are important socializing agents who may use different educational styles. Character strengths can help grandparents to relate to grandchildren more successfully. The objective of this study is to determine differences in the socialization styles used by grandparents by their sociodemographic and intergenerational variables as well as their character strengths. We assessed 300 grandparents with grandchildren aged 6-12 from different regions of Spain. We conducted One-way ANOVAs, Student’s t-tests and Pearson’s correlations. Differences in educational styles were observed by sociodemographic variables and their relationship with grandchildren. The use of the democratic style varied significantly depending on grandparents job situation, age, contact and relationship with the grandchildren, perception of gratitude and motivations towards caring. The liberal style showed significant differences based on kinship, closeness with the grandchild and their adult children gratitude. The authoritarian style reflected differences based on socioeconomic status, desire to see the grandchildren, and motivations for caring. Likewise, we observed positive correlations of the democratic style with optimism, creativity, forgiveness and open-mindedness. The authoritarian style correlated negatively with self-control. The liberal style correlated negatively with optimism, spirituality, forgiveness, creativity, vitality, and self-control. Although sex, age, the quality of the grandparent-grandchild relationship or the socioeconomic level seem to be associated with educational styles, the interpersonal variables (gratitude, contact, type of relationship, desire for contact, motivations) and grandparents strengths are the main variables that relate more significantly in how grandparents socialize their grandchildren. Based on the results found in this study, we make several proposals for future programs.Aunque los abuelos no son responsables de la educación de los nietos, no hay duda que son importantes agentes socializadores, empleando distintos estilos educativos. Las fortalezas del carácter pueden ayudar a los abuelos a relacionarse con los nietos de manera más satisfactoria. Este estudio tiene por objetivo determinar las diferencias en los estilos de socialización empleados por los abuelos en función de variables sociodemográficas, intergeneracionales y fortalezas del abuelo. Se evaluaron 300 abuelos con nietos de entre los 6 y 12 años procedentes de distintas regiones de España. Se realizaron ANOVAs de un factor, pruebas t-student y correlaciones de Pearson. Se observaron diferencias en los estilos educativos en función de variables sociodemográficas y de la relación con los nietos. El uso del estilo democrático varió significativamente en función de la situación laboral, edad, contacto y relación con el nieto, percepción de agradecimiento y motivaciones hacia el cuidado. El estilo liberal mostró diferencias significativas en función del parentesco, cercanía con el nieto y agradecimiento de los hijos. El estilo autoritario reflejó diferencias en función del nivel socioeconómico, deseo de ver a los nietos y motivaciones hacia el cuidado. Asimismo, se observaron correlaciones positivas del estilo democrático con optimismo, creatividad, perdón y mentalidad abierta. El estilo autoritario correlacionó negativamente con autocontrol. El estilo liberal correlacionó negativamente con optimismo, espiritualidad, perdón, creatividad, vitalidad y autocontrol. Aunque el sexo, la edad, el parentesco o el nivel socioeconómico parecen influir en los estilos educativos, son sobre todo las variables interpersonales (agradecimiento, contacto, tipo de relación, deseo de contacto, motivaciones) y las fortalezas del abuelo las variables que influyen más significativamente en cómo los abuelos socializan a sus nietos. A partir de los resultados hallados en este estudio se realizan varias propuestas para programas futuros
