Most of the materials used for food packaging are derived from petroleum, an alternative proposed in this review is the use of biodegradable materials that meet the growing demands of society for sustainability and environmental safety, and thus mitigate consumption. For this reason, proposals for different biopolymers have recently emerged to decrease the environmental impact of single-use plastics. This study presents a review of pectin as a biopolymer option for the solution of these environmental problems.
