Flaxseed (FS) is an oilseed rich in α-linolenic acid, lignans, and dietary fiber. Due to this unique composition, FS has potential to affect the health of the gut and breast. This study determined the effect of FS and its components, FS oil (FSO) and secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), on the gut microbiota, serum concentration of microbial-derived SDG metabolites, and mammary gland microRNA signature. It was found that animals maintained on 10% FS experienced the most prominent changes in gut microbiota composition and diversity compared to other groups.
