Collaborative decision making is key to interprofessional health care practice. This qualitative study explored the decision making process in the interprofessional management of hypertonicity. Eleven nurses, occupational therapists, physiatrists and physical therapists were interviewed. Data were analyzed using grounded theory method. A provisional theory and model of Interprofessional Decision Making in the Management of Hypertonicity emerged. Effective interprofessional decision making is built on a foundation of a level playing field. The process involves gathering and sharing information, developing a shared understanding of the functional goal, discussing back and forth, and recognizing that a decision evolves with new information.
