Mental illness is a serious epidemic that we must contend with in Canada. One fifth of Canadian youth suffer from a mental disorder. However, only one in five receive treatment and specialty care for their illness. Due to this tragic reality, it is essential for secondary school teachers to be equipped with the skills and tools to encourage positive attitudes towards mental health, reduce stigma related to mental disorders, and play a role in reducing the illness burden across the life span. The purpose of my investigation was to gain insight into best practice techniques for secondary teachers to utilize in the classroom, in order to serve students who are affected by mental illness.
