The objective of this study was to determine the role of mediastinoscopy in the diagnosis of lung disease with mediastinal involvement. Through a retrospective review of 151 mediastinoscopies made in the Thoracic Surgery Service of the Hospital General del Sur Dr. Pedro Iturbe de Maracaibo, from the years 1972 to 2007. Occurrence of patients with anterior mediastinal disease was higher among the 25-44 years of age; The most frequent symptoms were cough, dyspnea 47.9% and 24.3%. Also weight loss in 27.7% of cases. Most frequent radiological findings were hiliomediastinal widening and ganglionar comglomerates.
