In Venezuela, about 600.000 hectares are planted with maize ( Zea mays L.) annually; the 90% of this area correspond to hybrid materials. For the year 2008, the yellow maize production represented a 42% of this area. The national demand of this type of maize in previous years was covered with imports, which represented a high payment of foreign currency. In year 2001, an impulse was given to the programme for developing yellow-maize cultivars at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) to produce single-cross hybrids with both high yield and starch content in order to diminish maize supplies from imports.
