This dissertation is a socio-economic analysis of the Knights Hospitallers’ estate management in London, Middlesex, and Surrey. It is based on the examination of 372 charters that trace the social, legal, administrative, and economic history of the Order in England between c.1128 and c.1442. The Hospitallers’ involvement in London’s property market is placed within the larger social and economic context of the city. The evolution of the Order’s administrative policy from serving largely as an absentee landlord, to one entangled in litigation to recover rents in arrears, allowed the Order to more than double its income from urban and suburban possessions between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.
