AkenOva Code Number: cs00018 ABSTRACT Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. is parasitic on maize (Zea mays L.) and other cereals. In breeding nurseries aimed at identifying S. hermonthica tolerant maize genotypes, it is essential to artificially infest every hill with Striga seed. This is expensive, as it is labour intensive. To devise an effective screening procedure that requires less labour, two alternative methods of screening for Striga tolerance were compared using inbred lines and hybrids of maize.
