PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL FEED IN THE CULTURE OF CRAB, PORTUNUS PELAGICUS (PORTUNIDAE, DECAPODA). The result of the present study indicates that the function of Artemia nauplii as live feed for the zoea and megalopa of Portunus pelagicus can not be replaced by either natural fresh feed (chopped molluscs or mysids) or by artificial feed. Powdered artificial feed can be used to enrich the nutrient value of Artemia nauplii given to the crab larvae. Meanwhile, pelletized artificial feed appears to be acceptable to crab instar. Thus this method of nutrient study can be used for any stage of larval development, except for crab instar. For the latter case, it requires improvement in the system of sea water exchange
