The mouse 'En' genes are expressed in a band around the embryonic midbrain-hindbrain constriction. Fate-mapping experiments in chick indicate that the cerebellar primordium is located anterior and posterior to the midbrain-hindbrain constriction, whereas midbrain precursors lie more anteriorly.
