grantor: University of TorontoThe major purpose of this study is to describe and explain the relationship between nurses and female family members caring for an older person in the home. Using a critical ethnographic method in a socialist-feminist framework, it is argued that ongoing negotiations between nurses and family caregivers occur in the "intermediate" domain, where public and private domains intersect. Separate in-depth interviews with 23 nurse-family caregiver dyads were conducted to illuminate their everyday activities of caring, the negotiations that determine that work and the relationships that develop between them, and the conditions and consequences of these negotiations.
