PROC GLM of SAS has been the most common routine to analyze data coming from split-plot designs. However, this procedure was developed to evaluate fixed models and it does not consider this type of design that relates more to a mixed model with fixed and random effects, for which is necessary to evaluate procedures that consider mixed models. PROC MIXED of SAS was explicitly developed for analyzing data coming from mixed models, bypassing some problems of PROC GLM for this type of analysis. It is discussed the advantages of PROC MIXED in comparison with PROC GLM, using an example analyzed with both procedures.
