Ranunculus hederaceus which is rare in the Netherlands has been found in six hour-squares in the province of Limburg. The species seems to be restricted to small, 0—25 cm deep ditches with stagnant or usually very slowly flowing water. At some places the plants are covered with ironhydroxide due to seepage of ground water. It is essential for the maintenance of Ranunculus hederaceus vegetations that the ditches will be cleaned once a year in autumn, otherwise Ranunculus will be overgrown by grasses, e.g. Glyceria fluitans
