Integrated System of Equations for Estimating Stem Volume, Density and Biomass for Australian Red Cedar Plantation

A system of equations was proposed to access the stem wood density variation. As a taper function was fitted and the stem radius squared (r2) was estimated as a function of Diameter at Breast Height, Total Height and radius at height. A nonlinear function was fitted to estimate wood density variation as a function of the ratio between radius r and height h. The stem mass was estimated by integrating the product of stem volume and wood density. Stem measurements from a group of 72 trees of Toona ciliata were used to fit the taper equation. A group of 6 trees was selected and, using x-ray technology, a wood density database was created. The functions had good performed in estimating the radius and the wood density. The within tree wood density increased from pith to bark and from base to the top of the tree. With the density varying from base to top, the estimated mass of the stem, compared to the mass estimated using wood density value at DBH, had bias of 4.18%. When the density variation from base to top and pith to bark of the tree was considered, the estimated mass had a bias of 1.48%.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
