Ischemia due to vascular occlusion induces vasodilation as an initial response, followed by arteriogenesis or angiogenesis. Vasodilation through nitric oxide independent and dependent mechanisms may be sufficient to restore the altered neovascularization in pathological situations where the nitric oxide is altered.
