I discuss sources, main stages and results of digital three-dimensional reconstruction of destroyed houses from the 19th century in the town of Teteven. The goal is to test a new model of preservation of architectural heritage which exists now only in archived drawings and to establish new conditions of rethinking its value in virtual reality. I introduce the concept of monuments of absence insofar as the digital avatars possess authenticity and sacredness
