Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and geographically diverse source of renewable energy, with great potential for meeting energy demands. Lignocellulosic waste can be degraded and transformed into more useful products such as compost, biochar, biogas, and biofuels. Microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) are known to have the ability to degrade cellulose waste. The complex degradation intermediates and metabolic pathways require further study.
