Abstract Background For the older person living with end-stage hip or knee osteoarthritis, a hip or knee replacement can be a traumatic event, influencing the physical, physiological, psychological, social and economic facets of daily living. This interpretative phenomenological study aimed to reveal and interpret the daily lived experiences of the older person before, during and after a primary total hip or knee replacement surgery in a fast-track programme in South Africa.
