Integrating Augmented Reality (AR) with Building Information Modelling (BIM) to Enhance Construction Performance in Sri Lanka

New mobile, wearable, and pervasive computing devices are growing increasingly practical and allowing people to access internet information anytime they want, wherever they are because computers getting more powerful and smaller. Building information modeling, or BIM, is an internet-based tool that is posing an issue to the construction industry by providing a platform for fully integrated design, modeling, asset preparation, and collaboration. AR systems integrate virtual information into the physical environment to give users the impression that it is all around them. BIM and AR work together to open up new avenues for architectural engagement, navigation, and visualization that transcend the limitations of fixed computer-based interaction and navigation. Mobile augmented reality (MAR) combines virtual objects created by computers with actual circumstances. Users of MAR systems can interact with MAR gadgets like smartphones and head-worn wearables and transition smoothly from the real world to a mixed reality environment that is full of digital objects. To provide free access to digital content, these MAR systems improve user interactions with MAR technology. The main object of this study is to identify the most efficient AR integrated BIM techniques for enhancing Sri Lankan construction work performance. In this study, construction work performance is a dependent variable with the independent variable factors of accuracy and reliability, usability, cost-effectiveness, flexibility and adaptability, safety and security, user acceptance and adoption, time and schedule, and quality. This quantitative study focused on the questionnaire and multiple regression research design to gather primary data in Sri Lanka by applying the survey method. The data was collected from 27 participants who were willing to participate. The results from the regression analysis have shown that Accuracy and Reliability, Cost Effectiveness, and Quality while Integrating AR with BIM positively affect the construction performance and that the results are significant. However, using AR in the construction sector is not without its difficulties.
