While every jurisdiction will define hate crime differently, the general definition revolves around violence or discrimination directed at a person or group based upon their identity or perceived identity. Their perceived identity could be a visible characteristic (such as age, sex, or race) or an invisible characteristic (such as status, religion, or sexual orientation). According to the federal laws used in the countries that will be discussed in this paper, even those in non-marginalised groups are protected.
