A probabilistic model was developed to investigate the accumulation of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in the adjacent soil by repeatedly distributing contaminated sediments on different categories of landuse and soiltype. By interpreting the model results one must bear in mind that the model represents a simplification of the complex reality, in which the results are affected by the model definitions which have a regional variation. The model predicts (within a period of 50 years in which sediment is distributed four times) a strong effect on the concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in the soil if sediments of the so called pollution-level of class 1 and class 2 are distributed.
