An evaluation was performed on the applicability of the equilibrium partitioning concept and the use of partition coefficients for the derivation of soil and sediment quality criteria. A partition coefficient (Kp) is defined as the ratio of the amount of heavy metal bound by the solid phase, to the concentration in the pore water. Kp values for heavy metals are not constant but vary greatly with soil characteristics. For Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils, a partition model was derived to predict field-based Kp values as a function of pH and other soil characteristics (Fe, Al, clay and/or organic matter).
