Towards a typology of agricultural land use in the Netherlands

This report describes the development of a methodology for determining the attractiveness of land for agricultural production, which is part of the Decision Support System (DSS) for Rural Areas in the Netherlands. The physical suitability of soil and climate, economic and environmental aspects, and interactions with other forms of land use form the basis for determining the attractiveness. A typology has been developed to describe alternative types of agricultural production systems. Examples of descriptions of agricultural system types on the basis of this typology are given for a number of systems, including dairy production, and mixed pork and arable production. An initial example of the model's functions has been worked out for dairy production in a sandy-soil region in the Netherlands. On the basis of this study a number of recommendations are given for future research and model and scenario development using the models CLEAN, DRAM and the Ruimtescanner.Dit rapport beschrijft de eerste stap in de ontwikkeling van een model om de attractiviteit van land te bepalen voor landbouwproduktie. Dit model is een onderdeel van het Decision Support System (DSS) Groene Ruimte. De attractiviteit wordt bepaald op basis van de bodemgeschiktheid, economische en milieukundige aspecten en interacties met andere functies in de groene ruimte. Als basis voor de bepaling van de attractiviteit is een typologie ontwikkeld met typen voor huidige en toekomstige, alternatieve vormen van landbouw. Er worden voorbeelden van beschrijvingen van landbouwdoeltypen gegeven voor melkveehouderij en een gemengd systeem van varkenshouderij en akkerbouw. Een eerste voorbeeld van de functies van het model is uitgewerkt voor melkveehouderij in een zandgebied. Op basis van deze studie zijn een aantal aanbevelingen opgesteld voor toekomstig onderzoek en model- en scenario ontwikkeling uitgaande van de modellen CLEAN, DRAM en de Ruimtescanner
