In the year 2000 several reports appeared which analysed the Dutch health care and health status from an international perpspective. An analysis of these reports shows that international comparison of data adds an extra perspective and can act as a source of inspiration for priority setting in national policies for health and health care. Some comparative reports focus on presenting composite indices, others rather present basic comparative data. The first type of presentation produces general statements and may get much attention in the media. The latter is more informative for actual policy choices.
