Medicines now and in the future

What medicines are available at the moment? What developments are expected in the supply of medicines in the future and what are the possible consequences of new medicines for health and health care? These are the questions which have been answered by experts on17 illnesses and disorders important for public health. These were: breast cancer, lung cancer, colon and rectal cancer, diabetes mellitus, dementia, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety disorders, addiction, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, pneumonia, asthma and COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthrosis and osteoporosis. The forecasting period was divided into short (0-5 years), medium (5-10 years) and long term (10-20 years), which meant that expectations ranged from 'most probable' to 'most uncertain'. General aspects of medicines were also covered in this study, e.g. the production process from development to reimbursement, new search strategies, new vaccines for infectious diseases, gene therapy, pharmacogenomics, orphan drugs, undesirable and accidental effects of medicines, phyto-therapeutics and social acceptance of new medicines. The report concludes by sketching two scenarios for setting up pharmaceutical care in the future.Hoe ziet het geneesmiddelenaanbod er op dit moment uit, welke ontwikkelingen zijn hierin te verwachten in de toekomst en wat zijn de mogelijke gevolgen voor gezondheid en zorg? Deze vragen zijn beantwoord voor 17 ziekten en aandoeningen, die belangrijk zijn voor de volksgezondheid. Het gaat om: borstkanker, longkanker, dikke darm- en endeldarmkanker, diabetes mellitus, dementie, schizofrenie, depressie, angststoornissen, verslaving, coronaire hartziekten, hartfalen, beroerte, longontsteking, astma en COPD, reumatoide artritis, artrose en osteoporose. Bij de toekomstverwachtingen is een onderscheid gemaakt in korte termijn (0-5 jaar), middellange termijn (5-10 jaar) en lange termijn (10-20 jaar). Daardoor varieren de verwachtingen van 'zeer waarschijnlijk' tot 'zeer onzeker'. Daarnaast belicht het rapport algemene aspecten van geneesmiddelen: het proces van ontwikkeling tot vergoeding, nieuwe zoekstrategieen, nieuwe vaccins voor infectieziekten, gentherapie, farmacogenomics, orphan drugs, ongewenste en onbedoelde effecten van geneesmiddelen, fytotherapeutica en maatschappelijke acceptatie van nieuwe geneesmiddelen. Tenslotte zijn twee scenario's voor de toekomstige inrichting van de farmaceutische zorg geschetst
