Gezondheid op Koers? Volksgezondheid Toekomst Verkenning 2002

The third Dutch Public Health Status and Forecasts (PHSF) report once again contains a large amount of up-todate information about public health status, prevention and healthcare in the Netherlands. International comparisons and regional comparisons within the Netherlands are presented as well. Dutch life expectancy has increased over the past decades, but less quickly than in most other EU countries. Unhealthy behaviour is the major cause underlying this stagnation. A new, powerful, approach to prevention may turn the tide, however. Besides the need for strengthening prevention the future will bring a demand for more care, caused by ageing and population growth. In addition a further shift from cure to care will be necessary. Not only more healthcare will be needed, but also good quality care: effective, safe and accessible to all. The 2002 PHSF report aims to be an important source of information for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), but also for local governments, other ministries and many players in the field of Dutch public health and healthcare. Besides the 3Health on course' summary report, our PHSF activities also include publishing a series of 3theme' reports, about various public health topics, such as 3Health in the larger cities', and 3Cost of Illness in the Netherlands'. Finally, three websites are part of our PHSF activities: The National Compass for Public Health and Healthcare (www.nationaalkompas.nl), the National Atlas for Public Health and Healthcare (www.zorgatlas.nl) and a Cost of Illness website (www.costofillness.nl).De derde Volksgezondheid Toekomst Verkenning (VTV) bevat opnieuw een grote hoeveelheid actuele informatie over volksgezondheid, preventie en zorg in Nederland. Vergeleken met de ons omringende landen gaat het met de gezondheid in Nederland minder goed. Onze levensverwachting is weliswaar toegenomen, maar minder snel dan in de meeste andere EU-landen. Het relatief ongezonde gedrag is de belangrijkste oorzaak van deze stagnatie. Een nieuwe, krachtige preventieaanpak kan dit ongunstige tij keren. Naast versterking van de preventie zal in de toekomst door groei en vergrijzing meer zorg nodig zijn. Bovendien is hierbij een verdere verschuiving van genezing naar verzorging nodig. Het gaat echter niet alleen om meer zorg, maar ook om goede zorg: effectief, veilig en toegankelijk voor iedereen. De informatie in de VTV-2002 is niet alleen van belang voor VWS; ook voor lokale overheden, andere ministeries en de verschillende partijen in het zorgveld kan het een waardevolle informatiebron zijn. Dit rapport maakt deel uit van de VTV-2002. Naast dit samenvattend rapport zijn reeds verschillende VTV-themarapporten verschenen, over uiteenlopende onderwerpen als gezondheid in de grote steden, bevorderen van gezond gedrag, geneesmiddelen en medische hulpmiddelen, ouder- en kindzorg en kosten van ziekten.
