This report presents the results of the PIAMA (Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy) study on the incidence, prevalence and natural history of diagnosed asthma in children of 0-5 years old. A problem specific for this age group is that asthma does occur, but can not be clinically diagnosed with certainty. In young children, respiratory infections in combination with a small diameter of the airways often results in symptoms like wheezing, which are typical for asthma but do not necessarily mean that the child has asthma. Results of the PIAMA study (n=3000) show that a relatively large number of pre-school children are diagnosed by a doctor as having asthma.
