In the Netherlands neonates are screened for congenital adrenal hyperplasia, congenital hypothyroidism and phenylketonurea. Blood is collected on filter paper according to the heelstick procedure, preferably the fourth day after birth but at least on the seventh day, and analysed in one of the five screening laboratories. To evaluate the performance of the heelstick procedure, demographic and other data of 10.000 heelstick sets were collected and analysed per category of administrator (performer) of the heelstick procedure, per provincial vaccination administrative body and per screening laboratory for the period of 5 to 20 March 2001.
