International audienceFrom 1880 to 1922, Dublin Castle evolved from the HQs of the two police forces of the city (the Dublin Metropolitan Police and the Royal Irish Constabulary) to the house of the first official secret service department. In fact, this evolution corresponded to that of the Fenians (a group closely watched by the police forces) whose attacks became more and more violent. But was the change in the Castle function really answering the changes taking place in the republican movements? From 1916 onwards, the Castle was targeted and infiltrated by Michael Collins’s double agents. Thus, the Castle stood as a witness to many acts of treason in the game of espionage and played a key role in the Anglo-Irish relations. This article ...
