The reuse of spolia in ancient Rome on the example of the Arch of Constantine

V zaključni seminarski nalogi bom podrobneje predstavila prakso ponovne uporabe spolij v antičnem Rimu in njene umetniške, estetske, družbene, ideološke in politične implikacije, s posebnim poudarkom na primeru Konstantinovega slavoloka. Nalogo bom začela s predstavitvijo koncepta spolij oz. njihovega umetnostnozgodovinskega razumevanja. Nato bom antične spolije opredelila v kontekstu vojnega plena in prakse ponovne uporabe v obdobju rimske republike in rimskega imperija. Predstavila bom interpretacije prakse ponovne uporabe glede na retrospektivno dojemanje pojava. Ugotovitve bom aplicirala na primer Konstantinovega slavoloka in podrobneje predstavila družbene, politične, ekonomske in umetniške okoliščine nastanka morda najbolj znanega primera ponovne uporabe spolij.In this thesis I will present in more detail the practice of reuse of spolia in ancient Rome and its artistic, aesthetic, social, ideological and political implications, with an emphasis on the example of Constantine\u27s triumphal arch. I will begin by presenting the concept of spolia or of their art historical understanding. Next, I will define ancient spolia in the context of war booty and reuse practices during the period of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. I will present interpretations of the practice of reuse based on the retrospective perception of the phenomenon. I will apply the findings to the example of Constantine\u27s triumphal arch and present in more detail the social, political, economic and artistic circumstances of the creation of perhaps the most famous example of gender reuse
