The history (also linguistic history) and culture of Dalmatia have been determined by its geographical and political position between the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Kingdom. This article describes in detail the origin and territorial diversity of the old Dalmatian language. Etymological research indicates that majority of language loans in modern Adriatic Croatian dialects have their origins in: – Balkan Folk Latin; – Old Dalmatian; – Venetian dialect; – Italian literary language. The main reasons for the extinction of the old Dalmatian language result from the Slavic, and especially Croatian, invasion, and the Venetian occupation.
