Comparing the figures and careers of Pankowski and Segal is more than just a case study. The lives of those two Sanok-born writers – whose paths had parted just after they graduated from junior high school – illustrate two “paths” which, although quite common in contemporary Polish history, are exceptions from the stereotypes permeative traditional historical thinking. A survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, Pankowski managed to resettle in the West and never really considered himself an immigrant and throughout his life he was actively involved in the Polish literary scene.
