Norwid wobec ilustracji i sztuki ilustratorskiej

The article refers to the little known field of Norwid’s artistic and plastic activity, i.e. the art of illustration. It presents and characterizes not only illustrations produced by the creator of Solo, but also his judgements and metacritical ideas. Although the illustration was an incidental component of Norwid’s artistic creation, it constantly appeared in his works. In all likelihood, it was a creative challenge and a temptation: it gave the opportunity to earn money, improve the standard of living and establish balance in life, which was reflected in the biographies of popular nineteenth-century illustrators. In this respect, it seems that the poet had exceptional creative skills. Even Norwid’s contemporaries praised his special talent for illustration, nevertheless they undermined poetic skills of the author of Rzecz o wolności słowa. It would be difficult to describe Norwid as an illustrator in the true sense of the word – the poet was an occasional illustrator, but he never entirely devoted himself to the art of illustration. The author of the article tries to show that Norwid entered upon that field of art, nonetheless he withdrew from it and tended to avoid reunion.Tekst dotyczy mało znanej dziedziny działalności plastycznej Cypriana Norwida – ilustratorstwa. Przedstawia on i charakteryzuje nie tylko ilustracje twórcy Solo, ale także jego oceny i poglądy metakrytyczne na ten temat. Artykuł wskazuje, że chociaż ilustracja stanowi element incydentalny w twórczości plastycznej Norwida, pojawia się w niej stale. Była zapewne nie tylko wyzwaniem twórczym, ale także pokusą: stwarzała bowiem całkiem realną szansę zarobkowania, poprawienia nie najlepszej sytuacji egzystencjalnej, umożliwiała, co pokazują biografie słynnych ilustratorów tamtego czasu, stabilizację. Norwid miał też w tym zakresie niemały – jak się wydaje – talent. Nawet wielu współczesnych, przekreślając poetyckie zdolności autora Rzeczy o wolności słowa, wskazywało jednocześnie na jego duże możliwości w zakresie ilustratorstwa. Trudno byłoby określić Norwida mianem ilustratora w pełnym sensie tego słowa – bywał nim od czasu do czasu, nigdy jednak nie poświęcił się tej dziedzinie sztuki w sposób pełny i absolutny. Autorka tekstu stara się pokazać, że Norwid, wkraczając na pole sztuki ilustracyjnej, zrazu się z niej wycofywał, unikał dłuższych i intensywniejszych z nią spotkań
