The article is devoted to Antoni Małecki, a professor of the Lviv University for many years whose great achievements in the spheres of science, publishing, literature and translations are an example of combining of various interests and activities, which was characteristic of scholars in the nineteenth-century. The attention is focused predominantly on Małecki’s accomplishments in the sphere of Polish linguistics, to which he introduced – mainly with his two grammar textbooks published in 1863 – a then modern historical and comparative method.
