Management of Paper waste in Corrugated Business

Waste is a global issue. If not properly dealt with, waste threatens public health and the environment. It is a growing issue linked directly to how society produces and consumes. It concerns everyone. Waste management is one of the essential utility services underpinning society in the 21st century, particularly in urban areas and industries. In the corrugated industry, waste is created before the product reaches the consumer. This applies to everything from packaging design, efficient and precise production to quality controls. This thesis is being done for Stora Enso Packaging Solutions (SEP). The aim for SEP is to use raw materials in the most efficient way possible to minimise waste. SEP already has a process to quantify the amount of waste along the process with several checkpoints. Despite that, methods to minimise waste or analyse what SEP can do themselves with the waste need to improve. This thesis focuses on waste that arises in design phase and during production. In addition, circularity, waste management, what happens to the waste afterwards, can the waste be made more attractive to buyers and the differences in SEP various factories located in Finland and Sweden are discussed. Why are some of SEP's plants creating less waste while others are creating more? What is the difference in the processes? This study focuses on minimising waste in the corrugated board process at Stora Enso Packaging Solutions. The research questions aim to explore strategies to reduce waste, including identifying waste sources, implementing innovative technologies, and closing the recycling loop. The findings of this study could have economic and environmental benefits for the company and the wider community
