Two-phase nanocomposite oxides have emerged as an alternative material used in the fabrication of optical windows for military applications due to their enhanced properties over their coarse-grained and single-phase counterparts. To retain their optical properties, the grains/phase domains must be stable under the operating conditions for the windows. Until now, there have been no systematic studies on the structural stability of these materials due to the difficulty in making thin enough samples from these ultra-hard ceramics.
