Embryonic stem cells (ES cells) are derived from the inner cell mass of preimplantation stage embryos known as blastocysts, and are unique and very invaluable cells because they are pluripotent, meaning that they are able to differentiate into all derivatives of the three primary germ layers, such as ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm, including each of the more than 220 cell types in the adult body.
